SeasonalCampaignsWithoutLosingYourCoreBrandIdentity

Seasonal and promotional campaigns create a real branding risk that's easy to underestimate: a business goes all-in on festive colours, a completely different tone, and a temporary logo treatment for a few weeks, and the result is a brand that briefly stops looking like itself at exactly the moment more people than usual are seeing it for the first time.

The workable approach is treating seasonal branding as a temporary layer on top of the core identity, not a replacement for it. Your actual logo, your core colour palette, and your voice should stay clearly recognisable underneath any seasonal treatment — a small festive accent colour or motif added to an existing layout reads as a considered seasonal touch; a completely different colour scheme and tone for six weeks reads as a different business wearing a costume, and risks confusing anyone encountering you for the first time during that window.

A useful constraint that keeps this in check: before shipping any seasonal campaign material, check whether someone who's never seen your brand before would still recognise it as consistent with your regular website and social presence, not as an entirely separate promotional identity. If the answer's no, the campaign has drifted too far from the core brand to actually build on it — and once the season ends, you'll have spent effort building brand recognition for a temporary version of yourself rather than compounding recognition for the one that's actually permanent.

Knowing exactly what's fixed and what can flex is easiest with a proper guideline document already in place. See Brand Guidelines →
