CommonBrandingMistakesSmallBusinessesMake(AndHowtoAvoidThem)

A handful of mistakes show up repeatedly across small businesses, almost regardless of industry. The first: designing for yourself instead of your customer — picking colours and a tone because the founder personally likes them, rather than because they suit the audience being sold to. The second: chasing every trend in the category, which results in a brand that looks like a slightly different version of every competitor rather than a considered identity of its own.

The third, more structural mistake: treating branding as a one-time event rather than a maintained system. A logo gets designed, a website gets built, and then nothing gets revisited for years, even as the business itself changes — new products, a different typical customer, a different price point — leaving the visible brand quietly out of step with the actual business underneath it. The fourth: skipping written guidelines entirely, which is the single biggest reason otherwise-good brands drift into inconsistency.

The fifth, and possibly the most avoidable: getting a full custom brand built before validating the business idea at all. Spending significant money on a comprehensive identity system for a business that hasn't yet found paying customers means potentially redesigning everything once the real audience and positioning become clear. Simple, honest, inexpensive branding early, with a plan to invest properly once the business is proven, avoids most of this list entirely.

Starting simple and honest is exactly what our Single Logo package is built for, before you invest in more. See Single Logo →
